Flipping through the latest issue of Elle Decor, I was immediately fascinated by this image of the new Ninebark restaurant in Napa and the powerful simplicity of the herb and fruit branches above the banquette seating.

Ninebark is designed by the one of the hottest hospitality design firms, AvrKo. They continually bring to the scene eye-catching, inventive restaurants that have a fresh use of materials and concepts.  The way they placed the branches in frames here like artwork got me thinking about “herbs as art” and how living plants can really bring an organic, artistic statement in our own homes year round.

Here are a few other innovative ways to incorporate the beauty and life of real herbs indoors – especially during these upcoming winter months!

Build plant boxes inside wall structures for an architectural statement… A great idea for a dividing wall between two rooms or any large wall expanse.

 

Let it be a functional part of your kitchen cabinetry…

 

Or movable decorative wall mounted containers…

 

Create a room divider…

 

Transform a large window by adding glass shelves to hold a collection of various flower pots and planters …

 

Embrace repetition and create a series along a wall…  terra-cotta will always be timeless!

 

Think outside the box for the shape, design and placement  – you can practically use anything as a planter!  An antique teacup or a series of unique objects that are typically not used for planters can be unexpected and add character.

 

Get creative and let the growing begin this winter!  Let it become your living work of art.

We’ve seen rose gold flourish in the jewelry market in the past few years.  However, the warm, blushing tone is currently more popular than ever in interior furnishings and decor.  Did the new rose gold iPhone 6s spark the surge?  It’s definitely a sure sign that rose gold is one precious metal here to stay for a while.

 

While I love a good antique brass finish, there is something special that a touch of rose gold brings to the table.  It’s coppery tone adds an immense amount of warmth to a palette – especially in spaces, such as a kitchen, which is often dominated by a colder stainless steel finish.  As my favorite examples show below, it’s glowing effect is like no other!

There’s no question that fringe details are so hot right now for clothing and accessories – handbags, boots, heels, skirts, vests – It’s actually been around for a couple seasons now and we just can’t seem to shake it off.  There’s something memorizing about the way it swooshes as you move and how it transforms an ordinary ensemble into something full of life.

Simply said, fringe is fun

The most fabulous aspect about fringe is its immense amount of motion and layered texture.  Lately, I’ve noticed more and more furniture and accessory brands are also taking note and introducing fringe elements to their lines ~ and I have to say, we can’t get enough!

I spotted these leather fringe chairs at Lee Industries this past High Point Market.  Talk about taking a simple, squared chair and giving it some personality!  They were an eye catching, conversation piece that everyone just had to take a moment and sit in.

How fabulous is this custom bench by Bradley?!  It looks perfect in this bedroom designed by Cotton and Quill . It gives the room an unexpected twist – it’s stately, but with a kick.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

These small ottomans by V Rugs and Home are great ways to add a little accent of playful fringe into a space.  I’d place a pair of these side by side in front of a fireplace for supplementary seating.

 

It’s evident designer Laura Kirar is inspired by the qualities of fringe. Her collection for Arteriors is filled with fringed interpretations.  This tassel lamp and the ceiling pendants below are beautiful examples of taking fringe to another artistic level.  The layering and draping is stunning and elegant, yet the metal gives it a rock and roll edge.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I’ve been admiring lighting and accessories by Ro Sham Beaux for quite some time and adore their light fixtures with the hanging strands of rock quartz and crystal beads pictured here.

The organic way the strands hang freely is fabulous and it has a whimsical fringe look to it.  The illuminated beaded look is so fresh and sophisticated, pictures can’t do them justice.  They are stunning in person!

 

Ro Sham Beaux also makes this fun sculptural fringe wall sconce. Made of strands of gold painted hemp, it’s no wonder why they named this gem “Gisele.”  I can see this used in a series down a corridor or a pair flanking a large mirror for a statement.

 

 

So there you have it – in addition to rocking that fringe purse this season, find something with fringe detail for your home too!  Remember a little can go a long way – you wouldn’t dare want it to compete for any attention.

Effortlessly chic, relaxed sophistication, calm and easy elegance – How can you capture all of these characteristics in your interior?  The answer:  light hardwood flooring

A lot of people shy away from light floors thinking that if the walls are on the light side, the floors must be darker. The truth is that light walls paired with light wood floors can make a space more expansive and bright.  It creates a clean palette with a multitude of possibilities – You can keep furniture and decor monochromatic, or for contrast incorporate darker tones or colorful accents.

Think Scandinavian design, relaxed contemporary spaces, and breezy coastal interiors – Check out some of my favorite examples below!

 

Light hardwood floors are a “go to” for many retail spaces, such as J Crew and Club Monaco.  It provides a simple and fresh foundation that lets merchandise take center stage.  The grain in lighter wood tends to be more visible, which can really enhance the depth of natural materials and warmth in an interior.  I love using a herringbone or chevron floor pattern in a light wood plank.  It is a beautiful custom detail and a refined way to integrate a timeless pattern.

This idea caught my eye as I flipped through Southern Living’s current magazine featuring “165 ways to make the most of every inch” in small spaces.  Rather than painting or placing wallcovering inside a china cabinet- make it plush!  It’s adds an unexpected soft, textural element amoung the other hard surfaces.  Also upholstering the interior walls and shelves with a light batting underneath will absorb sound and minimize any rattling of dishes as you walk by.  A custom detail that’s both attractive and functional!

can you “dip” it?

We all know a fresh coat of paint can do wonders on a tired piece of furniture.  Now what if you only painted half or a small portion of it, leaving the rest as is and completely bare?  “Dip dyed” is exactly that – it gives any traditional wood piece a contemporary edge.  It is a DIY phenomenon taking the home furnishings and accessory market by storm.  It’s fresh, hip ,and best of all, you can practically dip dye anything – chairs, stools, baskets, candlesticks, you name it!

I see it being similar to how an artist applies paint to their canvas – simply a few brushstrokes can be just as meaningful and effective, if not more, than a multitude of brushstrokes.  The same applies for the dip dye. A little bit goes a long way, especially with a bright color.  Keep it simple and just dip it!

Today is national seersucker day.  A day to embrace your inner prepster and all the lightweight, pastel fabric has to offer.  A classic summer essential, it pairs wonderfully with a bright color such as coral for both fashion and home decor.  Whether you’re off to a summer soiree or cruisin in a coastal town, seersucker is bound to make an appearance!
