Brace yourself, the gingham pattern has been given a new life in both fashion and interior design. When I used to think of gingham, my mind went straight to checked fabrics in a traditional cottage-like home, a red and white picnic tablecloth, a conservate oxford shirt, and how could we forget Dorothy’s blue and white dress in the Wizard of Oz or the iconic fashion of Brigitte Bardot? It was classic, cute and charming.
Well it’s time to think about gingham in an entirely new way! It is now cool, funky and hip. When mixed with contemporary style, it becomes a throw back to classic old school style and brings a bit of nostalgia. Take the scale up a notch and it becomes a graphic and modern pattern.
According to Diane Von Furstenberg, “gingham is the print of the moment.” DVF’s current spring collection is filled with the gingham pattern translated in an up-to-date way for today’s fashion market. Different sized prints are combined in chic, contemporary designs to create a look DVF describes as “playful and sophisticated.”
From an interiors standpoint, the checked pattern is now being used on floors, walls, upholstery in an inventive way.
Looking to add a pattern to your space, but over the trellis and florals? Try gingham! If used strategically, it can bring much more to an interior than you may have ever thought!
